“I cannot live without books.” – Thomas Jefferson
Welcome to my celebration of bookworm joy and salute to my fellow scribes! Here you will enjoy wisdom distilled from masters of the craft to get you motivated, inspired, and moved, whether you are an author or reader. You will find a treasury of writing prompts, book reviews, fantastic landscapes you and your muse can wander in, encouragement while in the trenches, and more! The Inspiration tab has everything. If you want something in particular, Muse Monday is for images, essays, and encouragement. Writing Prompt Wednesday needs no explanation. Fantasy Friday is book reviews. Enjoy wandering around!
I like to say I came out of womb writing. Undoubtedly, I had a book in my hand too. If someone wants to interrupt me for something as mundane as dinner or something else, a likely response is “I’m going to finish my page.” I still mourn the tragic loss of the Library of Alexandria. I always have a book in my car because you never know if you are going to need it. I always overpack books for vacation because – horrors! – what if I run out? A great saying for my tombstone would be, “More time to read!” I do hope Jorge Luis Borges is right:
“I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library.”
If you are a fantasy author, whether traditional or indie, I would love to have the opportunity to review your book here. I do not read romances, erotica, or anything else overtly sexual, violent, or profusely laced with foul language. None of this is necessary to rock a book, so show me you have what it takes to write a tremendous story without it. I do not read e-books, as I find I read too quickly and do not absorb the beauty of the tale. I want to sink into your sub-created world, and to do that, a book in hand is a must! You can reach me at bookworm [at] ofagespast.com with subject Review Request, and I will give you the address to send your book to. I look forward to reading your masterpieces!
This is also the site for my publishing company which I started to bring out quality fantasies and books about such marvelous sub-creations. Chosen: The Journeys of Bilbo and Frodo of the Shire is the premier title with many more books to come!
Read an excerpt here.
Also just released is The Long Way Home, an e-book collection of poems centered about a heroic quest and its aftermath. Listen to the first one below!
Other books exploring what those in Middle-earth teach us are forthcoming.
In the coming years, fantasy series will also debut.
This venture and this site come from a lifelong love of reading and writing. Stories are vital to our lives because they let us into worlds we would not encounter any other way. They hold up a mirror to ourselves, to our world, and perhaps we will see clearer than before. Tolkien and Lewis both said beautiful things about the power of stories to reintroduce us to the beauty of the world we take for granted and not truly see because we see it so often.
See you among the pages!
