Welcome back to Fantasy Friday where you will find reviews of classic and new books!
What can I say but Jeff Wheeler rocks another book, the third in his Kingfountain series! This continues the story of Owen Kiskaddon, a highly placed and trusted ally of Severn, the King of Ceredigion. He is also the head of Severn’s spy agency. He always knew his king had a large dark side, but he knew light remained also. Now he begins to see the darkness consume Severn more and more, and watches the kingdom he loves and serves suffer under it. Owen knows who should really be on the throne: the Dreadful Deadman, who is but a child, a child who was stillborn and who Owen saved, so the boy could live to fulfill his destiny. Loyal and brave, Owen faces and then embraces a terrible choice: to save the kingdom, he must betray his king.
There is so much more to this book than my spare details. Owen knows fear, despair, grief, joy, heartbreak, hope and pain. He learns he can open his heart to love; to reach out in pity, mercy, and compassion to one who would have killed him; to renounce the easy path to defeat an enemy and choose one that will be much harder but will not haunt him for the rest of his days. I love Owen so much. I also like all the hints dropped from the Arthurian world. I hope the surprise visitor at the end of the book reappears in the next one. We shall see. Read this series!
